In 1953, the second successor to the R 25 single-cylinder model, the BMW R 25/3 , appeared. While the BMW R 25/2 from 1951 only had visual changes, the BMW R 25/3 underwent a thorough overhaul.
The most striking innovations were the modified tank, full hub brakes and alloy wheels. With 47,700 units sold, the R 25/3 was the most successful motorcycle model in BMW history well into the 1990s .

It was the right model at the right time, because 1954 was BMW's most successful year to date, selling almost 30,000 motorcycles.
